Lamat is an 8-week program, June 21st-August 13th, 2021, designed to introduce students to astrophysical research methods and tools through original projects in computational astrophysics.
The program targets science and engineering undergraduates currently enrolled in California community colleges. We welcome applications from students in other 2-year institutions. Selected interns work closely with UCSC faculty and PhD students from the Physics, Earth and Planetary Sciences, and Astronomy Departments. A stipend and housing will be provided for Lamat students.
The summer 2021 application is now open. Applications are due by December 4, 2020. In addition to instruction and research, we expect students to participate in our weekly social justice program which includes public speaking lessons and discussions of specific readings. This new component of the program is designed to teach students about race and racism and how that affects the field of astronomy and how that is inevitably going to affect their experience in it.
All finalists will be expected to attend a “Winter Science Computational Boot Camp” (held virtually) from January 11 to January 15, 2021 in preparation for the summer internship. A stipend will be provided for all winter boot camp participants.
